Chapter 223: The Unamed Explorer
Chapter 223: The Unamed Explorer
The body lay face-up in the middle of the hall.
The spacesuit covered the entire body, but it was completely unlike any space exploration suit Rover had ever seen in movies. Its size was larger, heavier, and far more complex. The silver-white outer armor was covered in scratches and burn marks, but the overall structure remained almost intact. The chest was a thick plate of armor, and the sides were fitted with several small devices of unclear purpose. On the back was a propulsion cluster along with two large mechanical components, with tubes extending from there running along the shoulders and both arms.
The helmet covered the face completely.
The visor in front was pitch black.
No one could see what was inside.
The body lay among countless metal fragments, wires, and shattered cubes. Both arms were spread slightly to the sides, as if it had fallen here a very long time ago and never stood up again. But what made Nanoe frown wasn’t the armor, nor the body’s size.
It was the spirits.
Thousands of spirits flew around the body. They didn’t attack. Didn’t try to possess the body. They only continuously approached then were pushed back by an invisible force. Then they would lunge forward again, like moths circling a flame that never went out.
Nanoe observed for a few seconds then said softly: "They’re being drawn in."
Rilia looked at the body. "That thing is absorbing souls."
Sunako held the lantern and carefully asked: "Is it still alive?"
No one answered.
Rover stepped through the gate.
The moment his foot touched the hall floor, a cold sensation suddenly pierced through his body.
Not from his skin.
But directly into his head.
Rover stopped.
A very faint humming sound appeared in his ears. At first like communicator static, but it grew clearer.
Beep...
Beep...
Beep...
Not quite a sound.
But a type of frequency.
A strange signal directly piercing through his skull, sweeping through every part of his brain. Rover felt a sharp pain in his head, like a thin needle was driving straight into the center of his forehead and gently rotating inside.
He frowned.
His hand instinctively clenched.
"Rover?"
Nanoe immediately stepped closer.
"I’m fine."
Rover answered, but his voice was lower than usual.
He looked at the astronaut’s body.
That frequency was still sweeping through his brain.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Each time it passed, the pain increased slightly. But at the same time, Rover felt something else.
[Mirror].
His ability was reacting.
Couldn’t be used.
But hadn’t disappeared.
It was like a key standing before a door far too large, forced shut by a force inside, but still continuously vibrating, as if wanting to return to where it originally belonged.
Rover looked around.
The metal fragments.
The destroyed cubes.
The procession of spirits.
The control panel using the password from the psychiatric hospital.
The space that didn’t allow [Mirror] to function.
A thought arose in his mind, his gaze gradually becoming more serious.
This place was connected to [Mirror].
Not indirectly connected.
Very likely a part of this ability’s origin.
Nanoe looked at Rover, then looked at the body. She didn’t ask further, but her hand gently gripped his wrist, as if wanting to confirm he was still completely conscious.
Right at that moment, the astronaut’s body moved.
Very slightly.
Just one finger.
But in a hall nearly perfectly silent, the sound of metal armor clashing rang out clearly enough to immediately draw everyone’s attention.
Clack!
Sunako startled and stepped back half a step. "Great Lord Rover..."
Selina drew her sword from its sheath.
Rilia stepped forward, the cold aura around her erupting. [Frost Battle Domain] spread across the ground, thin layers of ice quickly covering around her feet. Elith said nothing, but dozens of spider silk strands had already appeared in mid-air, forming a net ready to lock down the target.
Nanoe still stood beside Rover.
Her gaze calm.
Not panicked.
Not retreating.
The body moved again.
This time not just one finger.
The entire hand slowly clenched.
The spirits flying around the hall immediately fell into chaos. They let out countless distorted shrieks, then circled faster around the body, forming a massive spirit whirlwind. The lights on the spacesuit began flashing. A point of blue light appeared on the chest, then spread to the shoulders, arms, and the equipment on the back.
Beep!
Beep!
Beep!
Components that had been dead silent slowly powered on, accompanied by dry mechanical sounds echoing throughout the hall.
The frequency in Rover’s head grew stronger.
He felt his vision darken slightly, but didn’t retreat.
The body lying in the middle of the room suddenly rose into the air.
No motion of pushing up with hands.
No need to use legs.
The massive body in the spacesuit simply left the ground, slowly hovering in mid-air.
One meter.
Two meters.
Three meters.
The spirits swirling around it looked like countless gray ribbons spinning in circles.
Sunako looked up, her body stiffening. Because only now did everyone truly sense the size of the thing before them. It stood over three meters tall, with broad shoulders, thick arm armor, and equipment on its back nearly as large as a grown adult. The spacesuit itself was already heavy, but the body inside carried a far more oppressive presence, like a creature created to walk through lands where ordinary humans couldn’t survive.
The air in the hall grew heavy.
Each shattered cube on the floor began vibrating. The lines of light on the metal walls flashed in unison, accompanied by strange symbols running throughout the room.
Rilia lowered her stance slightly.
For the first time since entering this place, clear alertness appeared in her eyes.
"This thing is very strong."
Her voice was lower than usual.
Not fear.
But combat instinct warning that the opponent before them was completely different from any monster she’d faced.
Selina gripped her sword tightly, the corner of her lips still curved slightly but her gaze had turned cold. "Rover, should we retreat?"
Rover didn’t immediately answer.
He looked at the body hovering in mid-air, then tried opening [Mirror] once more.
No reaction.
Not even the smallest fracture could appear.
His ability seemed completely locked.
Not weakened.
Not depleted of energy.
But stripped of its right to be used.
That made Rover even more certain.
The thing before them was directly connected to [Mirror].
The Unnamed Explorer slowly raised its head.
The pitch-black visor reflected the light from the lantern in Sunako’s hands. No face could be seen. Impossible to determine whether what was inside was still human or had become something else. Only a red point of light slowly appeared within the glass.
Beep!
The sound rang directly in Rover’s head again.
A sharp pain flared.
He gritted his teeth but didn’t look away.
A flickering information panel appeared before him.
It wasn’t stable like normal information panels. The lines of text continuously distorted, vanished, then reappeared, as if even the System couldn’t fully read the existence hovering in the hall.
....
[Cannot determine.]
[Cannot determine.]
[Temporary designation: Unnamed Explorer.]
[Class: Overlord.]
[Status: Deceased — Unidentified.]
[Danger level: Cannot be assessed.]
....
Rover looked at the information panel.
The corner of his lips slowly curved up.
Not from joy.
But because since the Endless Game began until now, this was the first time he had truly seen something that even the System couldn’t fully assess.
Sunako looked at his expression, then looked at the Unnamed Explorer hovering in mid-air. She softly asked: "Great Lord Rover, why are you smiling? Shouldn’t we be feeling worried right now?"
Rover didn’t turn his head. "I am worried."
Sunako looked at the corner of his mouth. "Doesn’t look like it."
"I’m also feeling interested."
Sunako was silent for a few seconds then decided to step back closer to Selina.
Nanoe understood very clearly what Rover was thinking.
The thing before them was dangerous.
But the more dangerous it was, the greater the reward might be.
More importantly, the Unnamed Explorer seemed to hold secrets connected to [Mirror], the psychiatric hospital, Professor Harlan, and even the path Rover’s father had once left behind.
They couldn’t turn back immediately.
At least, before knowing what this thing wanted, retreating was too premature a reaction.
The Unnamed Explorer slowly raised one arm.
No immediate attacking motion.
But just that small movement was enough to make the entire hall shake.
BOOM!
Thousands of spirits circling its body simultaneously turned their heads.
Each pair of hollow eyes locked onto Rover.
Then, a distorted voice rang out.
Not through the air.
Not transmitted through ears.
But appearing directly in Rover’s head.
[Compatible signal detected.]
[Mirror fragment detected.]
[Confirming access permissions.]
Rover clenched his fist tightly.
His gaze turned cold.
The blue lines running along the spacesuit grew stronger by the moment. The equipment on its back emitted a heavy startup sound, and the red point of light behind the black visor seemed like an eye that had just fully opened.
Right at that moment, Elith suddenly turned her head.
Her expression changed.
"The retreat path."
Everyone immediately looked toward the gate.
At the end of the corridor behind them, the mirror surface Rover had opened to connect with the freight depot was developing a crack.
Crack!
The crack spread wider.
Then, the entire mirror surface shattered.
The way back had completely vanished.
The Unnamed Explorer hovered in the middle of the hall, thousands of spirits spinning around its massive body.
The cold voice continued ringing in Rover’s head.
[Temporary access confirmed.]
[Welcome back, Successor.]
